Our Latest Foal

The newest addition to our family of horses is Amber's foal, Red Reign (Petey), born in May 2009.

Little Petey was imprinted at birth, loves people and is another chestnut offspring from the pairing of Fancy Candi and Pallas Digion.

Exceptional Mares
At Southgate Farm our goal is to produce top-level eventers, starting with the great bloodlines in our mares and carefully selecting the stallions they are bred to for athletic ability, conformation and disposition.

Our mares foal out at home, and the foals receive basic imprinting and a lot of handling as they are welcomed into the world. After weaning, they spend their time growing up together until we have them professionally started toward the end of their second year. Then, they're turned out for the winter and start in light work in the spring of their third year. In the summer or fall of their third year, the training of the young horses progresses to beginning to learn the skills they will need as eventers.

All Southgate Farm young stock are registered with the United States Eventing Association, the United States Equestrian Federation, and the Performance Horse Registry. All Thoroughbreds are registered with the Jockey Club of North America and are Breeders Cup nominated.

Fancy Candi

Amber

Amber was born in 1993, one year after her full brother Hugh, also born and bred at Halo Farms in California. Amber won twice on the track before being retired with an injury. Then, she had a successful career as a showjumper until she was injured again. We bought Amber sight unseeen as a broodmare prospect, and with her disposition, size and conformation, she has proven to be a most incredible dam of fine sporthorses.

Politically Correct

Polly

When we bought Polly, she was already a proven eventer, having won up through the Intermediate level. She proved to be a safe, sound eventer with the best eye for cross-country jumps of any horse we have known. After she lost an eye, we retired Polly from active competition as a Grade 1 eventer. Polly has had 2 beautiful foals, Trudie and Georgia and continues in her role as matriarch of Southgate Farm.

Adriatic Sea

Addie

Addie is a very well-bred Thoroughbred from the Danzig line; she is also a half-sister of Leonnatus Anteas, the 2006 2 year-old horse of the year in their native Canada. Addie performed well at distances of 1 mile and above on the track, but after being brought back too quickly from an injury, she was claimed and due to be shipped to Puerto Rico to continue racing. With the help of friends in Kentucky, we interceded and bought Addie as a broodmre prospect. She was bred to Tenpins and Scrimshaw; happily, we sold those foals to the same trainer who originally found Addie.

We are looking forward to breeding many quality sporthorses with Addie, who currently in foal to Innkeeper, a son of Secretariat.

Yashgan Skylight

Skye

Purchasing Skye and importing her from Ireland was the result of a chain of happy circumstances. We had been looking for a quality mare with Edmund Burke bloodlines, and happened to find one for sale in Ireland. What followed was an exchange of emails that resulted in a friendship with Skye's owners, Cass Hartigan and Jerome Foley. Although Skye was no longer for sale, we went to County Kerry for Cass and Jerome's wedding.

When they were blessed with a child, Cass decided that Skye might enjoy a move to the States. Skye is presently in foal to Navarone, and as she is still a young horse, she may ultimately have an eventing career, in addition to producing fine Irish Sporthorses.
