Our Latest Foal

The newest addition to our family of horses is Amber's foal, Red Reign (Petey), born in May 2009.

Little Petey was imprinted at birth, loves people and is another chestnut offspring from the pairing of Fancy Candi and Pallas Digion.

Lili Eventing Beau and Flo

Young Horses
At Southgate Farm our goal is to produce top-level eventers, starting with the great bloodlines in our mares and carefully selecting the stallions they are bred to for athletic ability, conformation and disposition.

Our mares foal out at home, and the foals receive basic imprinting and a lot of handling as they are welcomed into the world. After weaning, they spend their time growing up together until we have them professionally started toward the end of their second year. Then, they're turned out for the winter and start in light work in the spring of their third year. In the summer or fall of their third year, the training of the young horses progresses to beginning to learn the skills they will need as eventers.

All Southgate Farm young stock are registered with the United States Eventing Association, the United States Equestrian Federation, and the Performance Horse Registry. All Thoroughbreds are registered with the Jockey Club of North America and are Breeders Cup nominated.

Foxglen's Fancy

Fiona

Fiona was Amber's third foal, born in 2005. We had decided we really wanted to breed Amber to a full Irish Draught, and made a special trip to Maryland to meet Foxglen Himself, who is a gentle grey giant. Ready or not, Fiona showed up a good 2 weeks before we expected her, standing bright-eyed and whinnying when we came out to the barn. Fiona is developing into a big, strong girl with an incredible confidence and self-assurance about her. She learned well from her mother, and has become the best babysitter on the farm.

Killiney Hill

Kite

Kite was Amber's fourth foal (number 3 by Pallass Digion), born in April of 2006. She is a very special horse that loves spending time with people. From the beginning, she has had silky, fluid movement. Now, Kite is showing that she also was born with the jumping ability that Flo and Marley have, tribute to both dam and sire. As she grows, Kite is maturing into a prototypical eventer, short-coupled, slightly uphill with a well-developed rear end.

Truth Be Told

Trudie

Trudie is bred for eventing success! Her dam, Politically Correct, a Grade 1 eventer, campaigned successfully through the Intermediate level in Areas III and V, becoming a regional legend and placing 4th at the North American Young Riders CCI* championships in 2000. We selected Steuart Pittman’s Salute the Truth (Willy) to be the match, as he is a Thoroughbred and actively competing at the Advanced level. Trudie is a very attractive and sweet girl with loads of promise. She was professionally started under saddle in the fall of 2008, and is currently training with Lili Bennett in Virginia.

Bru Na Boinne

Bruno

Bruno is another spectacular colt from the magical pairing of our mare “Amber” and Pallas. He could be a bookend to his older sister Kite – their markings are so similar - along with sweet personalities. Bruno will likely mature to 16.2+ hh, while having all of his siblings’ athletic abilities, movement, substance and temperament. Bruno has been groomed and handled daily from birth and has regular farrier work of trimming and filing.

Rainy Night Inn

Georgia

Georgia joined the Southgate Farm family, foaled May 17, 2008. She hit the ground solid, strong and sassy – just how we like them! Georgia is Polly's second foal, and is by Innkeeper, a son of Secretariat.

If her antics in the field are any indication, she is going to be quite the athlete! From birth, she has had daily handling and is the calmest foal we have had.

Red Reign

Petey

Petey is Amber's sixth foal, the fifth from the pairing of our foundation mare Fancy Candi and Pallas Digion. Like his four full brothers and sisters, Petey is a chestnut and sports white socks on his rear legs.

This little colt is incredibly comfortable around people, and is a very independent spirit out in the pasture, often grazing by himself.
